So what exactly is Phyre?
Well, simply put, it's a great way to play pen-and-paper games online. Games like D&D, or Vampire: The Masquerade, or Risus or what have you.
What can it do?
Here's the long list. And keep in mind that new things are being added every day:
- Dice
- Character sheets
- Private notes
- Game chat
- Full GM controls
- Private messaging
That's it?
Not at all! That's just the stuff we could fit in quick bullet points. You can send characters (as well as blank character sheets) to your friends, build character sheet templates using a point-and-click designer with custom CSS editing, post your private notes to your campaign for everyone to see... phew.
Plus there's a lot of stuff that's still coming, like battlemaps and automatic logging and things. Seriously, it's rad. You can get more details here, in this forum topic.
What do I need to play?
Friends and an internet connection is basically it. It also helps to have a real browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari) and not one of those other ones.
Internet Explorer is not supported at this time and if it works at all it's an accident. Opera almost certainly doesn't work.
How do I get started?
See, you shouldn't have asked that. Because now you're going to get all disappointed, and I hate it when you get like that.
...Aw, don't look at me that way. Fine, okay. See, thing is - this world isn't perfect, and neither are we. And as a result, Phyre is still in beta. At this stage the beta isn't accepting new users - but there are a couple of exceptions.

- email me (wk@eurge.net).
Neither is perfect, I know. But right now Phyre is still pretty young, with a number of sharp edges. That's a fancy way of saying that maybe the UI is inconsistent and parts of the service only work most of the time. The beta's going to fix that, and until then it's best to grow slowly. Sorry!
